How to clean silver jewellery

Silver reacts to the elements, and will tarnish over time. If you don't like the patinated look, and want you silver jewellery to retain its original shine, there are steps you can take to maintain it.

Diluted soap water

Silver jewellery can be cleaned with a soft cloth or a soft toothbrush and diluted dish soap. First soak your silver in mild soap water for 5 minutes, then brush gently. Remember to dry your jewellery! If the tarnish is light, this gentle soap water method should take care of it. Brushing your silver jewelry with mild soap water regularly will also prevent further tarnishing.

Aluminium foil and baking soda

Cover the insides of a bowl with aluminium foil. Put your silver jewellery in it so that it touches the foil. Sprinkle 1-2 table spoons of baking soda or sea salt on top of the silver and pour boiling water in the bowl so that it covers the jewellery. Let it soak for 10-15 minutes, then rinse and dry.

Commercial Silver Cleaners

If you want, you can also buy specialised silver cleaners. These are very efficient, and come in many forms. You can buy cloths soaked with silver cleaner, or a bottle in which you can dip your silver jewellery.

Things to consider:

If your silver jewelry has stones, pearls or other materials, take special care. Some materials might be damaged if subjected to the methods of cleaning mentioned above.

Also, if your silver jewellery has an intentional surface patina, or is plated with something, take special care. KuuKyy's jewelry does not have anything added to the surface.

If you feel unsure about cleaning your jewellery yourself, or if it is old or fragile, you can always take it to be cleaned by a professional.

How to protect your silver jewellery

You can help your silver jewelry keep its shine by storing your pieces separately in boxes or small bags, in a dry environment (not bathroom). Contact with lotions and cosmetics will also tarnish your silver jewellery.
